The Post-Industrial Mutants are creatures assembled from different machinery mechanisms, parts of old machines and other industrial waste.
The first series of mutants was created in 2008 during the C.O.A.L project, that I had participated in as a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.
Eighteen artists, dealing with various fields of art, from Poland, France and Germany were invited to visit the three biggest industrial districts in Europe: Ruhr, Upper Silesia, Nord-Pas de Calais. The purpose of the whole project was to create an art piece inspired by the industrial landscape.
During the first excursion to Dortmund, making photographic documentation at a former coking plant "Hansa", I found hidden in the dark corner two charming carriages for coal. Since then through the whole project I was hunting with my camera more old machines and exploited parts with interesting shapes.
The remains from the heavy industry in many regions of Europe are not really associated with positive emotions. However, as a person that was born and lives in one of these regions, I really feel comfortable in Upper Silesia and I can appreciate its rough character.
The idea of the Post-Industrial Mutants project was to evoke positive emotions and change people's point of view about things that make up the post-industrial landscape.
I wanted to give a new live to the machines, that once were working in a full swing and now are standing useless and lifeless by playing with their forms like with pieces of a puzzle I "mutated" post-industrial.
Post-Industrial Mutants are kind of reminders left after the industrial wealth, as well as just funny characters with different personalities.
